PFAS- (Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances): the 'Forever Chemicals'

PFAS (Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances), namely perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a class of synthetic chemicals.
They refer to any substances that contain at least one perfluorinated methyl (CF3) or methylene (CF2) carbon atom (without any H/Cl/Br/I)).
PFAS encompasses hundreds of compounds, including common ones such as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanesulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF), perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA), perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFSA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), and perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHxA), etc.
PFAS has raised environmental and health concerns due to its persistent and bioaccumulative properties.
PFAS are known as "forever chemicals" because the carbon-fluorine bonds in them are extremely stable and can remain in the natural environment for thousands of years without decomposing, thus causing environmental pollution. They are not easily decomposed, exist in the environment for a long time, can spread through water, soil and air, and may accumulate in the human body.
Studies have shown that long-term exposure to high levels of PFAS may be associated with some health issues, such as impacts on the immune system, liver damage and an increased risk of certain cancers.
